A trip to Rottenburg am Neckar

There was a 700 years anniversary of the voluntary city guards of Rottenburg am Neckar. 700 years ago Albert II von Hohenberg built a castle where Rottenburg today is situated. He recruited some guards. The guards of the castle were normal citizens but they did a great job protecting the newly built castle. Now 700 years later they celebrated these brave guards. And other guards from whole south-west Germanys cities came, too.

First on that day we walked through Rottenburg and I showed the International Students some Roman ruins which are approximately 2000 years old. We also saw the ruins of the old city wall and one tower of it. There are also ruins of a Roman bath house which were found during the construction of a parking place. A construction worker found those ruins below the ground and today they are well protected. Now Rottenburg has a museum under a parking deck – The ruins are situated in the park of Rottenburg.

It was strange for them, but also for me that the whole city was calm and not many people walked in the park of Rottenburg, where we were. The fact was, that they already queued up for the parade of the guards.

At 2 pm the parade through Rottenburg started and we were very excited. The parade started with guards from Tübingen, which had mounted guards, many flags and cannons. The guards were accompanied by music from marching musicians. The parade took about one hour and entertained well. We all had fun.

After that I recommended the international students the famous German-Turkish finger-food, called “Döner”. It consists mostly of meat and vegetables, laying in a thin bread. They all enjoyed it and found it yummy.
